String of Light that Connects all things
'String of Light that Connects all things' (S.O.L.T.C.A.T.) is a series of temporary pop-up installations that imagine the California coast as an expression of Light and Space. Each month, Mueller hosts a pop-up open to the public, showcasing a steel form that references a constellation visible in that month's night sky. The mission of this series is to voice the interconnectedness of all things. Just as celestial bodies affect ocean tides, these beach installations offer an opportunity to meditate on the fullness of a moment, in concert with the environment and humanity's place within it.
Installed in the mid-afternoon, under the bright sun, the art pieces cast dramatic, dark-lined shadows on the sand, recalling ancient sundial structures like Stonehenge. Later, set against the backdrop of the setting sun, these pieces become silhouetted, facilitating a meditative practice on the interplay of figure and ground. Depending on the day, viewers observe the tide rising or falling. The wet sand creates a mirroring effect that changes and moves with one's perspective. Footprints in the sand, a sailboat passing on the horizon, and birds flying into view all contribute to the expression of a brief moment in time and space.
Working with the day's ocean tide, the pieces are installed in the early afternoon and removed at dusk. These temporary pop-up installations consist of four to seven lightweight welded steel forms. They do not obscure the horizon; rather, they invite viewers to approach and see a perhaps familiar ocean view framed in a new perspective, drawing awareness to the changing environment.
